Chapter 19

Eli wasn’t quite sure how he’d gotten himself roped into this. One minute, he was dropping by the Martin haus as had become his daily routine, the next minute, he was knee-deep in ceramic dishware. Miriam’s spoon collection had been handed down for generations and contained enough silverware to reach town if he laid it end to end.

Sarah, it became rapidly apparent, was in the middle of getting ready for a small get together with her friends and their kinner in honor of the bopplis’ first birthday. Two months had gone by and still no sign of their mamm. Sarah and Miriam guessed at the official date but had decided to select three months past the anniversary of their arrival, since they’d gleaned they were about nine months then.

He’d been here an hour and after his roll and lemonade, Sarah had put him to work moving furniture. Miriam was too frail and Katie toward the end of her pregnancy, so Eli was happy to help with the heavy lifting. The delicious smell of birthday cake baking tickled his nostrils.

Sitting at the kitchen table, the bopplis asleep in the bassinet, he paused to look at her beside him. She was cutting out a squadron of forest animals on pieces of colorful construction paper. They’d be used as simple decorations on the table and the younger kinner could always play with them or amuse themselves with the designs.

The strings of her kapp kept falling into her face as she concentrated on wielding the dull scissors, and she kept pushing them back, only to have them fall again, obstructing her vision. He imagined her lifting the scissors too high and snipping the strings right off. He realized that this was contentment. Just sitting together in quiet support, doing mundane tasks. “You know, I forgot about this.”

She spared him a quick glance, then looked back at what she was doing. She’d already finished a set of paper dolls hooked together by their paper limbs. “Forgot about what?”

“Forgot about how much you enjoy having an excuse to have friends over. To light the haus with community and laughter. Tis one of the things I like most about you. You’re a gut friend, Sarah Martin. To everyone.”

The entire area was covered with paper, fabric, string and paste. Until half an hour ago, Katie had been beside her, making things to use as decorations, but Sarah’s cousin had gone to assist Miriam and Eli had gotten this blessed alone time with Sarah.

He leaned over and pushed back the wayward string behind her ear so she could stop blowing it out of the way with her lush lips. He didn’t think he could take much more of that particular sight. “About how overboard you can get when it comes to holidays and birthdays.”

“I do not go overboard,” she sniffed. “At least Miriam doesn’t think so. She encourages me in my endeavors.”

“Jah, you do,” he told her finally, finishing up a string necklace. He took a second to admire his work before starting in the next one.
